What to compare in heat pump quotes

A heat pump comparison should cover sizing, installation scope, and whole-system operation as well as the unit itself. Quotes for the same model are not equivalent if one omits necessary installation or commissioning tasks.

Ask how the system was sized

Give every bidder the same building, heating-system, and consumption information. Ask which demand the proposed pump is sized for and which heating or hot-water functions it will serve. Establish what remains in use from the existing system.

Motiva’s Finnish heat pump information (opens in a new tab) explains the differences between pump types. Choosing for your own home still requires assessing the building and existing equipment. Nominal output alone is not enough to compare proposals.

Put the quotes in one comparison table

  • Equipment: Which exact models and additional components are included?
  • Installation: Which electrical, plumbing, and building tasks will be completed?
  • Location: How are noise, service access, and water management addressed?
  • Existing system: What is removed and what is retained?
  • Commissioning: What is measured, adjusted, and explained to the user?
  • Ongoing support: Who services the system, and what do the terms cover?

Ask for an itemized description of work beyond a limited standard installation. Establish what your home actually requires before ordering.

Assess savings estimates separately from the price

Ask for energy prices, consumption, and other assumptions used. If bids use different assumptions, request calculations with common values. You can then tell whether the difference comes from the equipment or the calculation.

Confirm that installers have the authorizations and expertise required for your project and that practical servicing is available. Include handover and user instruction in the agreement so performance assessment does not stop at equipment delivery.
