Custom curtains: measurements and materials

Measurements for custom curtains depend on the hanging system, style, and desired fullness. Window width alone does not establish how much fabric is needed or the finished curtain length.

Decide on the function before measuring

Explain whether you want privacy, softer light, blackout, or a decorative frame. Show the window, radiators, doors, and nearby structures. Clarify the track or rod and whether it is already installed.

Ask the sewing professional for measuring instructions or book a measuring visit. Record where length is measured from and the intended clearance above the floor. Both parties need to mean the same thing by each measurement.

Choose fabric with care needs in mind

Look at a sample in window light and evening lighting. Ask about drape, cleaning, and any dimensional change during care. For blackout curtains, check the complete arrangement, including hanging and edges.

Pattern matching can affect fabric quantity. Do not order fabric based only on room dimensions without an estimate from the maker.

Agree on the complete delivery

Check the style, fullness, lining, and attachment method. Ask for measuring, fabric, sewing, and any installation or hanging to be included in the price. Clarify whether supplying and fitting the track is part of the same job.

Using samples and references helps confirm the goal. Keep approved measurements and care instructions. The value of custom curtains lies in how they work at that particular window and how practical they are to use and maintain.
