A stuffy home: investigate before choosing a ventilation fix
Investigate a stuffy home through observations and ventilation performance. A feeling of stuffiness alone does not identify the cause or establish that duct cleaning or a new ventilation unit is the right solution.
Record when you notice it
Note the room, time of day, number of people, and links to cooking, bathing, or weather. Explain whether it began after a remodel, equipment replacement, or another change. Recurring patterns help a specialist focus the investigation.
Gather the ventilation type and maintenance history. Check the operating instructions for user maintenance tasks. Do not close air terminals or alter system settings on your own in response to a symptom.
Arrange a performance assessment
In a Finnish housing company, report observations to maintenance or the property manager. In a detached home, ask a ventilation professional to assess operation and necessary measurements. Establish the visit’s scope and reporting in advance.
Motiva’s Finnish home ventilation guide (opens in a new tab) helps distinguish system types. The investigation must still be specific to your building. Not every possible cause of odor or stuffiness can be resolved by ventilation maintenance alone.
Let findings determine the next step
Ask the specialist to distinguish a confirmed malfunction, proposed repair, and further investigation. If another building-condition investigation is needed, define its scope before ordering.
Ask how improvement will be assessed. Compare observations under similar usage conditions and keep the measurements. Accept a cleaning and balancing quote only when you understand its purpose. A broad service package is not a substitute for identifying the cause.
