Plan your home’s lighting room by room
Lighting design starts with what happens in each room. General lighting, task lighting, and accent or mood lighting serve different needs, so one striking ceiling fixture does not make a complete plan.
Walk through everyday activities
Consider cooking and dining in the kitchen, reading and relaxing in the living room, and getting dressed or finding belongings in the entryway. Mark furniture positions and consider where light should come from to avoid distracting shadows.
Tell the designer about everyone’s preferences, any particular vision needs, and fixtures you want to keep. Daylight and surface colors affect the result, so include photos taken without artificial lighting.
Plan the controls at the same time
Ask where lights will be switched on and which groups should work independently. Bedroom controls may be needed both by the bed and at the door. In a living area, you may not want to change all the lights at once.
Check that dimming and any smart controls are compatible with the chosen products. Ask for a straightforward way for everyone to use the lighting. An app alone does not solve a guest’s or child’s need to turn on a light.
Confirm installation details before finishing surfaces
Agree on a fixture list, placement plan, and the information needed for electrical design. Plan and carry out fixed installations with appropriately qualified professionals. A lighting preference is not the same as a completed electrical installation plan.
Check whether the quote includes design, products, installation, and any trial lighting assessment. In an electrical upgrade to an older home, settle fixture locations before finishing surfaces. Keep product information for future maintenance and replacement.
