Where will the snow go this winter?
Plan snow storage before the first plowing of the season. A suitable pile location keeps access routes, sightlines, and maintenance points usable while accounting for spring meltwater.
Allow room for the whole winter
Walk the property with the snow removal provider and mark agreed storage areas on a map. Consider gates, trash containers, parking, and routes needed for escape or maintenance. Identify features in the ground or beneath surfaces that need protection and will be hidden by snow.
A small early-season pile can grow until it restricts use of the property. Ask the contractor how the available space will serve routine maintenance and when snow may need relocating or hauling away.
Check where meltwater will go
Plan piles so the effects of melting can be managed. Areas beside a building, near a property boundary, or in an awkward depression are not automatically suitable. If needed, have a professional assess elevations and water flow.
Ask which plants and structures need protection too. A winter maintenance map helps the provider when surface boundaries are no longer visible.
Agree on the decision to haul snow away
Record who monitors available space and what triggers additional work. Ask how loading, transportation, and receiving fees are priced. If cars need to move, name a contact to arrange it.
Hauling snow away may not be included in seasonal plowing. Check this in the snow removal contract in advance, so a heavy snowfall does not lead to rushed orders with unclear terms.
