Restoring and reupholstering an armchair

An armchair restoration should assess the frame, seat support, and cushioning as well as upholstery. New fabric alone will not restore comfort or repair loose joints.

Describe how the chair feels and its visible condition

Explain whether the seat sags, any area feels uneven, or the frame moves. Include photos of the chair and damage and its known history. Ask the upholsterer whether a wood repair specialist or other skills are needed too.

Agree on the assessment scope before stripping the chair. Some needs may become clear only beneath the old upholstery, so establish how additional work will be approved.

Choose fabric for the way you use the chair

Describe daily use, pets, children, and cleaning preferences. Ask for options suited to the chair’s shape and construction. Pattern direction, nap, and fabric behavior affect both appearance and the work involved.

Look at a sample at home beside other furnishings. If buying fabric yourself, confirm suitability and quantity with the upholsterer before ordering.

Compare the price of a chair ready to use

Ask for a breakdown of stripping, frame repairs, cushioning, fabric, and upholstery work. Clarify transportation, wood finishing, and changes to the design separately. Agree on whether original parts or materials will be retained.

Preserving a piece and changing its look are different goals for an armchair too. At handover, assess comfort as well as appearance and agreed details. Keep the fabric care instructions and a record of the work.
