Solid wood or panel materials for custom furniture?

Choose solid wood or a panel material based on the furniture’s use, construction, and desired finish. The material name alone does not establish quality, repairability, or suitability for the space.

Describe use and appearance

Explain whether the piece is for an entryway, workspace, or living room, for example, and the wear it will face. Show the desired color and wood grain if those matter. Ask the maker to propose suitable options.

Alongside solid wood, there are different panel materials with finishes such as veneer, paint, or laminate. Ask for a precise description rather than a general label such as “wood furniture.”

Assess the material together with the structure

Ask about weight, the effects of size and the intended environment, cleaning, and possible repairs. A long shelf’s performance depends on construction and support as well as the material. Suitability needs to be assessed as a whole.

Ask for a sample showing an edge and the finish too. You will see the furniture from different angles in daily life; a flat sample alone does not show how edges will be made.

Ask for the complete price of each option

Changing the material may affect fabrication, finishing, and transportation. Request options with the same dimensions and intended use so the comparison remains meaningful. Different parts can use different materials when construction and appearance support it.

Along with the price of custom work, consider care and possible later alterations. Choose the material for how the furniture will serve everyday life and the finish you want to maintain, rather than its perceived prestige alone.
