Planning a two-stage move with temporary storage
A two-stage move needs a plan for storing belongings and delivering them later. Choose storage based on the items, storage duration, and whether you need access during that period. Size alone is not enough to compare options.
Separate the items you need immediately
First gather the clothing, work equipment, and personal items needed in temporary accommodation. Pack them separately from boxes going into longer-term storage. Label boxes so you can find them without unloading the entire space.
If you need access, ask about opening hours, entry arrangements, and retrieving individual items. A mover’s storage service and a self-storage unit may operate differently.
Check conditions and costs
Describe what will be stored, such as textiles, electronics, or delicate furniture. The provider should confirm suitability. Clarify insurance and storage restrictions before contracting.
Ask for a total price or a breakdown covering:
- The first move and handling.
- Packing and protection.
- The storage billing period.
- Collection or handling visits during storage.
- The second move to the new home.
Ask what happens if the new home is not ready on time. Extending storage and changing the delivery date are separate terms.
Plan the second move while arranging the first
Keep an inventory and the agreed labels. That lets the second delivery be arranged without estimating the volume from scratch.
Allow time to receive and check the new home before stored items arrive. The moving services checklist helps coordinate cleaning, transportation, and key handover.
