Agree on weather protection before framing begins
Include weather protection in the framing plan before materials arrive. The key questions for an owner are responsibility, scope, and monitoring: who provides protection, who checks it, and how problems are handled.
Protection begins when deliveries arrive
Ask the material supplier and contractor what storage conditions the products require. Delivered materials may not be installed immediately, so temporary storage needs a plan too.
Coordinating delivery dates, unloading space, and installation order reduces unnecessary waiting. Ask the contractor to name the person who checks incoming materials and records any damage.
Do not leave responsibility between contracts
Consider the period after the framing contractor finishes but before the next trade starts. Who maintains protection during that gap? Ask the same question for weekends and interruptions.
Agree in writing on:
- Protection methods based on plans and product instructions
- Who performs and documents checks
- What happens after damaged protection or wetting
- Protection costs and removal
- Conditions required before the next work stage
Follow up on concerns
If a material’s or structure’s condition is in doubt, obtain the responsible professional’s assessment before concealing it. A surface that looks dry does not by itself establish readiness for subsequent work. Required measurements and procedures depend on the project.
Keep observations, decisions, and agreed repairs with the other site records. The aim is a traceable construction process, not shifting technical assessment onto an owner without construction expertise.
Include weather-protection boundaries in the framing contract scope at the quote stage.
