What does a landscape design plan include?

A landscape plan’s scope depends on whether you need an initial concept or documents suitable for construction and quote requests. Before ordering, confirm which drawings, dimensions, and plant lists the designer will deliver.

Explain how the yard is used and its constraints

Provide site information, photos, and existing drawings. Describe the users, parking, storage, areas for children or pets, and your interest in maintenance. Include the budget and any plan to build in stages.

Mark trees, structures, and views to preserve. Explain problems such as standing water or difficult access. Ask whether the designer will measure the site or rely on the information you supply.

Distinguish a concept from construction documents

A concept helps compare the arrangement and feel of different areas. Construction may need more precise dimensions, elevations, materials, planting lists, and details. Not every design service includes these.

Ask the quote to list documents, the number of alternatives, feedback rounds, and any site visits. Clarify whether technical design for earthwork or water management is included or requires another specialist.

Confirm how you can use the plan afterward

Ask about delivery formats and whether you can use the documents to request quotes from different contractors. Clarify how changes will be updated if the budget or timing changes.

A useful plan explains choices: why a path is there, what the plants need, and how the yard will be maintained. Ask for those reasons before approval if they are missing. You can then build the yard renovation budget around the plan’s stages of work.
