What affects a moving company’s price?
A moving company’s price depends on carrying, access, and additional services as well as the belongings being transported. Floor area alone does not establish the work involved. A good quote request describes conditions at both homes.
Describe the inventory and carrying routes together
Give the number of rooms, large furniture, and unusually heavy or delicate items. Photos can support the estimate, but also identify belongings in storage areas and on the balcony.
For each address, describe the floor, elevator access, stairs, and distance from the truck’s parking spot. A long carrying distance may affect the work more than a short drive between homes.
Ask for the pricing assumptions
Check the number of workers and vehicles, when billing starts and stops, and any minimum charge. Clarify whether travel time, packing supplies, and other extras are included.
Ask separately about:
- Disassembling and reassembling furniture.
- Delivering and returning moving boxes.
- Handling specialty items.
- Charges for waiting time.
- Rescheduling and cancellation terms.
Also confirm the damage-reporting process and whether the insurance coverage suits your belongings with the provider.
Compare the same service
A lower hourly rate might cover a smaller crew, for example, so the total time may differ. Ask both companies to estimate from the same inventory and access information.
If you will pack, agree on how ready your belongings must be when the truck arrives. Unfinished packing changes the workday and can add waiting time.
Comparing self-packing with a packing service helps define the order before choosing a mover.
