When to repaint exterior wood siding

Time exterior wood repainting around surface condition, previous treatments, and suitable working conditions. A year marked on the calendar does not establish whether the house needs fresh paint or repairs to the wood first.

Have the finish and wood inspected

Gather the previous paint type and painting date if available. Photograph peeling, cracking, dark patches, and areas where the wood appears damaged. Walls facing different directions may be in different condition.

Ask the contractor to distinguish maintenance washing, painting, and any wood repairs. Covering damage with new paint does not address its cause. A professional can assess the substrate and compatibility of treatments.

Allow for weather in the schedule

Ask how the contractor checks conditions and substrate readiness against the product instructions. Exact start and finish dates without a weather allowance may be a poor basis for exterior work.

Agree on communication if dates move, and on storing scaffolding and materials in the yard. Mention celebrations, vacations, or other times when access or outdoor space must be available.

Ask for more than a wall-painting price

Itemize walls, eaves, trim, window surrounds, and other components to be treated. Check whether washing, preparation, protection, scaffolding, and final cleaning are included. Ask how repairs discovered during work will be priced.

After completion, keep the products, color codes, and repair details for future maintenance. If other exterior repairs are planned, planning the whole renovation helps avoid opening up a freshly painted surface soon afterward.
