When a quote leaves questions unanswered

A business’s response may leave out information you need to compare it with other quotes. Ask the business to clarify those points before ordering the work. Explain what is unclear and why it affects your choice. A focused question helps the professional complete the proposal in a way that addresses your needs.

Identify the missing detail

Read the response alongside your original request and find the point that needs clarification. For example, “installation included” may not tell you whether removing and disposing of the old furniture is part of the job.

Ask directly whether those tasks are included and what they would cost if charged separately. You then have an answer you can use in the comparison.

If your needs have changed, explain the change clearly. A new preference may affect the approach, price, or schedule, so ask for the proposal to be updated accordingly.

Ask about the reasons behind a recommendation

Clarification can also reveal a business’s expertise. If a proposed method or material is unfamiliar, ask why it suits the project and which alternatives were considered.

When restoring furniture, for example, ask why the maker recommends repairing or replacing a particular part. The explanation helps you understand the work and whether it fits your goal. You do not need to know all the technical terms beforehand.

Put your questions in one message

Start by referring to the quote you received. Explain what suits your needs, then list the questions that affect your decision. You might begin:

“Thank you for the quote. Your proposed approach looks promising. Before I place an order, I would like to clarify the following points.”

  • Does the price include removing the old furniture and installing the new piece?
  • What is the total price for the work described?
  • What do we need to prepare before installation?
  • When could the work take place?

Choose the questions that fit your situation. If you want an option with a different scope, describe it in the same message so the business knows which package you are asking about.

Continue the conversation by email

Helmi brings finding businesses, sending quote requests, and comparing responses into one process. Read incoming responses in the offers view and discuss them with Helmi. You can ask what is missing from a proposal and which questions would help. Confirm the missing details and the effects of any changes with the business itself.

When you want to continue with a business, select it for follow-up and resolve the open questions by email. You agree on placing the order separately afterward.

Keep the clarifications with the quote. If the scope changes substantially, ask for an updated quote that presents the full proposal clearly. Confirm the next step once you and the business share an understanding of the work.
